Designing Immersion Through Camera

Immersion is how much the player feels inside the game. By adjusting camera mechanics, we directly influence how players connect with the experience. In the industry, we use this concept to understand: - The player’s level of engagement; - Whether the experience can sustain interest over time. The higher the immersion, the stronger the desire to keep playing.

First Person: brings players closer to the action.

- Direct sense of presence; - High level of immersion; - Active participation in every action. The character’s experience is projected directly onto the player.

Third Person: strengthens the connection with the narrative.

- Connection to the narrative; - Medium level of immersion; - The feeling of experiencing an interactive story The player observes and engages with the world around them. Top-Down: prioritizes control and strategy.

- Control over the scenario; - Immersion focused on game logic; - Greater weight on decision-making

Engagement comes from strategy working as intended. Each camera format serves a strategic purpose. It considers the type of game, the experience we want to create, and how the player connects with the universe. Choosing the right camera defines how the game is lived and how it impacts the player.
